Educational opportunities at the national

ASSA offers a wide variety of educational opportunities at its national specialty.

Symposium
Open to all. The symposium offers different programs each year that have particular relevance to the breed. Presentations in past years have included discussion panels of longtime Sheltie breeders, discussions about the breed standard, and sessions on canine reproduction and health. The symposium is an all-day session that is scheduled on the Tuesday of National week. Pre-registration is required, and the fee includes a box lunch. Click here for more information on this year’s program.

Visiting Hours
Open to all, no fee. On Tuesday evening, the grooming area is open to provide an opportunity to examine the dogs entered at the show and meet their owners and breeders in an informal setting.

Fanciers’ Ringside Education
Open to all, no fee. This program offers an opportunity to receive one-on-one ringside tutoring from an experienced breeder or breeder-judge. Sessions are available for all adult conformation classes except Winners and Best of Breed. Pre-register to select your preferred class by contacting coordinators Dorothy Christiansen or Bev Llewellyn, or sign up at the catalog sales table at the show.

Sheltie Standard Study Group
Open to all. Each year, a portion of the breed standard is discussed in this Wednesday evening seminar. The seminar includes a lecture and discussion of the standard by experienced breeders as well as an opportunity for hands-on evaluation. Participants learn how to examine a Sheltie to evaluate and assess virtues. Pre-registration is required. For more information, contact Jennie Hynes, coordinator.

Judges’ Education Seminar and Workshop
Open to current and prospective AKC judges. This seminar offers discussion of the breed standard and perspectives on judging the Shetland Sheepdog. A portion of the seminar presents the opportunity for hands-on evaluation. Ringside mentoring is also available for participants on Thursday and Friday. The seminar is usually scheduled for Thursday. Contact Linda More, committee chair, for more information.

Junior Handling Clinic
Open to all juniors 9–18 years of age, no fee. This Friday evening session offers handling instruction and coaching as well as an informal pizza party and quiz bowl. All skill levels, from beginner to advanced, are welcome. Pre-registration required. For more information, contact Meredith Hector, committee chair.
