ASSA membership

Prospective members || Current members

As the AKC parent club of the Shetland Sheepdog, ASSA membership consists of both member clubs and individual members.

Member clubs: The 70 ASSA member clubs across the country sponsor AKC-sanctioned matches, specialty shows, obedience, rally, agility, herding and tracking trials as well as educational events for members and the general public. ASSA member clubs are open to all—you don’t need to be an ASSA member to join an ASSA member club. Membership in your local club can also be an important first step in readying yourself for ASSA membership.

A local club interested in becoming an ASSA member club is required to hold licensed specialties or sanctioned “A” matches approved by the AKC. To hold licensed specialties the club must join the ASSA as a member club. For details on application procedures, see article 1, sections 1b and 3b, of the ASSA bylaws.

Individual membership: Open to US residents 18 years of age and older who are in good standing with the AKC and have achieved an AKC championship title on an AKC-registered Shetland Sheepdog:  Champion of Record (CH), Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH), Master Agility Champion (MACH), Herding Champion (HC), and/or Champion Tracker (CT). An applicant must also provide endorsements by two ASSA members in good standing who reside in the same or an adjoining state. For more information on individual membership, contact, Yvonne Samuelson, at 650-440-9714, chair of the membership committee.

Associate membership: Open to non-US citizens. This level of membership is non-voting. Associate members may not serve as officers or board members. For more information on associate membership, contact, Yvonne Samuelson,chair of the membership committee.

Membership application is now online. You must, however, download three components: the application, ASSA bylaws, and ASSA guidelines for ethical behavior.

Life membership: The granting of life membership is the highest honor the ASSA can bestow. Life members are required to have been ASSA members for at least 25 years, have made significant service contributions to the organization, have attained success as a breeder or exhibitor, and have conducted themselves in a sportsmanlike manner with exhibitors and judges. Candidates arenominated by the life membership committee and approved by the board of directors. Life members are exempt from annual dues and retain all voting and office-holding privileges. Ginny Cavallaro is the chair of the life membership committee.  List of Life members.

For more information on all four types of membership, see article I, page 3, of the ASSA bylaws.
